BMW’s ICE-powered 4-series Gran Coupe gets an electric makeover with the eDrive35 joining the eDrive40 and M50. It is anticipated that shipments to the United States will commence in early 2023.

Unlike its high-performance, all-wheel-drive sibling, the eDrive40, the eDrive35 gets around owing to a single motor situated in the back. The eDrive35 has 281 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque, but at a lower price. In comparison, the eDrive40 has 335 horsepower, and the M50 has 536. To put it another way, the eDrive35’s estimated 5.8-second 0-60 mph pace is a full second slower than the other two cars in the comparison (our test of the eDrive40 got it done in 4.8).

Between the eDrive40’s 301-mile EPA range on standard 18-inch wheels and the M50’s 227-mile EPA range on optional 20-inch wheels, BMW predicts the eDrive35 should achieve a range of 260 miles. The eDrive35’s smaller battery is responsible for all of these benefits. While the batteries in the eDrive40 and M50 are identical in size at 81.5 kWh, the eDrive35’s are smaller at 66.0 kWh net and have a maximum charging power of 180 kW, compared to the other two models’ maximum rates of roughly 200 kW.

With a base price of $51,400, the i4 eDrive35 is the least expensive electric vehicle offered by the Bavarian carmaker.
